Who Pays for What? A Guide to Traditional Wedding Expenses 👰🤵
By Joel Gresham – aka Wedding Guy
So, you’re engaged, congratulations! Now comes the big question: Who pays for what? While nothing is set in stone, there are some traditional guidelines in American culture that couples often follow when dividing wedding expenses. Keep in mind that every couple and family is different, and the most important thing is to find a financial plan that works best for you.

What the Bride’s Family Traditionally Covers
Historically, the bride’s family takes on the majority of wedding costs, including:
- Venue – The ceremony and reception site fees
- The Dress – The bride’s gown, accessories, and alterations
- Catering & Food – The cost of feeding all the guests
- Wedding Day Transportation – If needed, this includes shuttles or limousines
- Wedding Cake – A sweet centerpiece for the reception
- Florals – Bouquets, centerpieces, and décor for the ceremony and reception
- Photography & Videography – Capturing the memories of the big day
- Lodging for Bridesmaids (if needed) – Covering hotel stays if necessary.

What the Groom’s Family Traditionally Covers
The groom’s family also plays a key role in wedding expenses, typically covering:
- Rehearsal Dinner – The meal and venue for the night before the wedding
- Alcohol for the Reception – The bar tab for guests
- Bride’s Bouquet & Groomsmen’s Boutonnieres – The personal florals for the groom’s side
- Officiant Fees – Paying for the person conducting the ceremony
- Entertainment for the Reception – The DJ or live band to keep the party going

It’s All About What Works for You
While these are traditional expectations, modern weddings often split costs differently. Some couples choose to finance the wedding themselves, while others divide expenses based on financial circumstances rather than tradition. Open and honest conversations with both families can help determine the best approach.
At the end of the day, what matters most is celebrating your love in a way that feels right for you!
